The Mechanical Engineering Training and Advisory Centre (METRAC), a training institution under the Ministry of Works and Transport, on 1st July, 2026 passed out 71 road equipment operators trained to strengthen road maintenance operations and improve the management of government road equipment.
The Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, urged the operators to uphold professionalism, safety and accountability while handling government machinery.
His message was delivered by the Chief Mechanical Engineer and Commissioner for Mechanical Engineering Services, Dr. Eng. Timothy Tibesigwa, during the pass-out ceremony.
Dr. Eng. Tibesigwa said government can only realise value from its investment in road equipment when the machines are properly operated, maintained and managed, helping to reduce breakdowns, fuel consumption and accidents.
Eng. Winfred Naluyinda the MoWT Assistant Commissioner for Mechanical Engineering Services Inspection, said the training, conducted under the theme “Effective Care, Use and Management of Road Equipment for Improved Productivity,” aimed at improving productivity, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing equipment performance.
The Acting Principal of METRAC, Eng. Ivan Watta who hosted the training, said the participants received practical training in operating and managing motor graders, excavators, wheel loaders, water bowsers, motor rollers and dump trucks to improve road maintenance efficiency and service delivery.
The ceremony was attended by Luwero District LC V Chairperson Erastus Kibirango, Kizito Henry representing the Luwero District Engineer, and Tamale Faifah representing Victoria Equipment Limited, the Ministry’s capacity-building partner. The graduates were awarded certificates of completion.
