Commissioner Maritime Administration

The Department is headed by the Commissioner Maritime Administration

 

The Department of Maritime Administration commits to;

 

i) Initiate, formulate and review policies, laws and strategies to promote safety of Inland water ways;

 

ii) Ensure seaworthiness of vessels through periodic inspections, registrations and licensing;

 

iii) Maintain a register of vessels and seafarers of vessels flying the Ugandan flag;

 

iv) Enforce the Maritime regulations and international maritime conventions to ensure safety, security and marine pollution prevention;

 

v) Coordinate and manage Aeronautic and Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) activities;

 

vi) Coordinate implementation of Regional & International Maritime Affairs;

 

vii) Investigate marine casualties or incidents and devise mitigation measures;

 

viii) Sensitize and create awareness to the public about Maritime safety practices;

 

ix) Ensure best practices in regulating Ports and Maritime Training Institutions; and

 

x) Collaborate with classification societies so as to delegate some of the MA functions.

 

xi) Prevention of collision of ships and safety of navigation through installation of Aids to navigation and their maintenance

 

xii) Coordination of hydrographic surveys, dredging works, charting of water ways including updating of hydrographic information.
