Ministry of Works and Transport Engages Stakeholders on Digital Number Plate Issuance

Hon. Fred Byamukama Minister of Works and Transport together with the Minister of State for Transport, Hon. Julius Wandera Maganda, convened a stakeholder engagement meeting with representatives of vehicle dealers, motorcycle importers, clearing and forwarding agents, and the Ministry’s technical team to address the persistent delays in the issuance of digital number plates.

In his remarks, the Hon. Minister acknowledged the challenges experienced by vehicle owners and industry players, emphasizing that the current delays are unacceptable. He assured stakeholders that the Ministry is implementing measures to restore efficiency in the issuance of new number plates, transfers, and replacements, while strengthening internal systems to improve service delivery.

Stakeholders were encouraged to continue engaging the Ministry through their respective associations to facilitate coordinated communication and timely resolution of emerging issues. The Minister reiterated Government’s commitment to supporting the private sector and ensuring that concerns raised are addressed promptly.

Stakeholders highlighted key concerns, including production capacity, communication gaps, the need for greater transparency, accountability, and delays that have affected businesses and vehicle owners. They also called for improvements in the vehicle registration process to enhance efficiency.

The meeting concluded with a number of resolutions aimed at improving service delivery. These include conducting a comprehensive audit of the current contractor’s capacity, assessing options for additional service providers, investigating reported cases of delayed issuance despite full payment, strengthening stakeholder communication, reviewing registration procedures, and providing regular updates on progress.

The Ministry committed itself to implementing the agreed action points within the stipulated timelines and will continue engaging stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and reliability of the digital number plate programme.
