Government Extends Support To Families Affected By The Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo Road Project

An elderly woman in Yumbe District is among those receiving a new home under the Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo Road Project, as the Government of Uganda supports selected families affected by road construction to secure decent accommodation.

Ms. Onjia Jimiya, a resident of Mazanga Cell, Kuru Town Council, Yumbe District, received a self-contained two-bedroom house with a sitting room, an outdoor kitchen and a bathroom. She expressed gratitude to the Government for the support.

During the ongoing World Bank Implementation Support Mission on 13th October 2026, the project team visited beneficiaries in Yumbe District to assess progress on the housing interventions.

Eng. Alex Otim, the project’s Contract Manager, reported that two houses provided under the support programme for vulnerable Project Affected Persons (PAPs) had already been occupied, while other houses were nearing completion. The intervention targets selected individuals, particularly elderly people, whose circumstances may make cash compensation alone insufficient to secure adequate accommodation.

The project has also provided seven houses to PAPs who opted for in-kind compensation instead of cash payments. According to Martin Kasozi, the Project Social Development Specialist, six of these houses were ready for occupation, while the remaining house was still under construction.

The interventions form part of the project’s resettlement and social safeguards measures, which seek to address the effects of road construction on households whose land or property is affected. The project team is working with district leaders and community structures to address concerns raised by affected residents and support the implementation of resettlement measures.

The Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo Road Project involves upgrading 103.08 kilometres of road across Koboko, Yumbe and Moyo districts. It is funded by the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA) and implemented by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Works and Transport.

As construction continues, the housing interventions aim to help affected families access suitable accommodation alongside the development of transport infrastructure in the region.
